LANSING, Mich. — The Michigan Senate on Thursday approved Sen. Mark Huizenga’s legislation to allow spouses and surviving spouses of Pearl Harbor veterans and Purple Heart recipients to retain their special recognition license plate.
“It’s fitting that on the eve of Veterans Day, we pass a measure to honor the service and sacrifice made by our veterans and their families,” said Huizenga, R-Walker. “This is a simple fix that would recognize the contributions of military families by allowing surviving spouses to keep a specialty plate following the death of their veteran spouse.”
Spouses are already eligible for several special recognition plates relating to military service, including plates for veterans of World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, Iraq War and the Afghanistan conflict as well as for disabled veterans and former prisoners of war.
Senate Bill 1183 would expand the eligibility for the Pearl Harbor Veteran and Purple Heart Recipient special recognition plates to include spouses and surviving spouses.
Individuals interested in obtaining a special recognition plate denoting military service must submit an application to the secretary of state providing proof they qualify for one of the currently available recognition plates.
SB 1183 has been sent to the House of Representatives for consideration.
