LANSING, Mich. — After supporting the Senate Finance, Insurance and Consumer Protection Committee reporting Senate Bill 1 to the full Senate on Wednesday, Sen. Mark Huizenga, R-Walker, minority vice chair of the committee, issued the following:
“Senate Bill 1 is a step in the right direction toward solving the tax fairness problem facing Michigan seniors and offers an opportunity to continue discussions on reducing the burden on all retirees by extending the exemption to all forms of senior income.
“The state of Michigan has a multibillion-dollar surplus, and we can afford to provide relief to all our seniors.”
Currently, SB 1 would only exempt certain retirement income from the state income tax.
