PFAS Testing for Kids

Giving Parents Peace of Mind

PURPOSE

The policy aims to provide parents with peace of mind about their children’s health though a state-provided study to monitor the levels of PFAS in their children’s blood.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS

 

  • Who’s Eligible
    • Children who on or after January 1, 2012, while under 11 years of age, who resided in households that use well water in Kent, Ottawa, and Kalamazoo counties.
  • Testing Process
    • Primary care physicians must inform eligible families about PFAS testing availability and, with parental consent, may order a blood test to check for elevated PFAS levels.
    • Blood samples will be collected at a designated local hospital laboratories and sent to the state testing laboratory for analysis.
  • Data Utilization and Research
    • With consent, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services in collaboration with designated research institutions may use collected data for pilot studies and distribute educational materials to inform and console families about PFAS exposure.
    • Research institutions must obtain approval from institutional review boards for studies.
  • Community Education
    • Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, in collaboration with the research institutions, will develop and distribute educational materials to inform families about PFAS exposure and its potential effects.

COST AND SAVINGS BREAKDOWN

  • Using existing capable resources like the state testing lab in Lansing saves the cost of requiring a new facility for testing.
  • All qualified minors in designated areas will receive testing at no cost to their families.
  • An initial appropriation request would be made to cover program costs.
